About the house

The Rudolf-Schäfer-Haus is located at Grosse Str. 15 (pedestrian zone) in Rotenburg.

The listed half-timbered house from the 17th century (built in 1675) is one of the last small town houses typical of Rotenburg.

Over the centuries, its inhabitants practiced their craft or engaged in trade and often farming.

In 1911 Rudolf Schäfer bought the house from master tailor Johann Gerken.

He had large windows installed in the upper rooms and set up his studio there. He lived there with his family from 1912 until his death in 1961.

In 2011, the city of Rotenburg received ownership of the house, renovated it in 2014 and transferred ownership to the Rudolf Schäfer Association, which today uses it - together with the city's tour guides - for exhibitions and events.

Rudolf Schäfer House:
The historic house at Grosse Straße 15 houses a small museum dedicated to the history and work of the renowned church painter Rudolf Schäfer. Opening hours: Wednesdays 3-5 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.;
Small musical matinees are held irregularly on Saturdays.
