The colossal Church of Our Lady or Grote Kerk is located in the historic center of Veere. The church, consecrated in 1543, is the symbol of the history of the small old port town. However, the tower was never completed and over time the church treasures disappeared from the building. In 1809 it was shelled by the British fleet and in 1811 the French converted it into a hospital for wounded soldiers. They installed nine wooden floors in the room. The Gothic windows were bricked up. A period of decline followed. To save the building from demolition, the state bought the Grote Kerk of Veere in 1881 as the first national monument in the Netherlands. Since then, the monument has been the responsibility of the Government Buildings Agency.

A beautiful church with an eventful history. Inside there is an exhibition plus museum that reflects the history of the church in a modern and vivid way. A successful app rounds everything off. The view from the high tower is particularly recommended
