Isabelle or Belle kept diaries from the moment she could write. After the early death of her mother, she lived with her grandmother in Leeuwarden. From the age of 15 she lived with her father Jasper Gerrit van Ittersum on the Reelaer and there she combined all her previous writings into a new diary 'Histoire', which she kept until her death.
