Difficult hike category! Trekking poles/hiking sticks are recommended, especially for the descent.
The final climb is very steep and has a lot of loose rock.
Start early so you can walk the first section in the shade.

However, a typical ascent and descent from the Plöckenhaus via the Spielbodenalm and Spielbodentörl can take anywhere from 5 to 7 hours round trip. What is the historical significance or origin of the name 'Polinik'?

The name "Polinik" is believed to derive from the Slovene word "opoldne," which means "midday." This refers to the time when the mountain's shadow falls over the Gail Valley, providing a historical and cultural insight into how the peak was perceived by local communities.

Are there any less crowded alternatives or similar hikes in the Carnic Alps if Polinik Summit is busy?

The Carnic Alps offer numerous other stunning hiking opportunities.
