In the mid-19th century, flooding from the Göhl River posed a major threat to the mine in Bleyberg/Plombières: Water repeatedly penetrated the tunnels and claimed lives. To prevent this, a diversion of part of the river was requested and approved in 1861.

By 1862, a tunnel several hundred meters long was built beneath the rock, keeping the Göhl away from the mine. The construction cost approximately 200,000 francs.

The tunnel is a technical monument to mining engineering from an era when hazards were deliberately controlled while simultaneously harnessing hydropower. It demonstrates how work-related accidents were prevented while simultaneously harnessing resources.

The underground passage or "cave" where the Geule "disappears" for a moment is not natural but artificial. It was dug for the relocation of the Geul because too much water from the river flowed into the mine tunnels. The original bed of the river still exists in the form of the small lake a little further away. By diverting the river, the water could be drained at high water levels. It all looks quite impressive and the sound of the water is also worth it. Also take a walk from the viewing platform to the wall where you will see a water gate that was used for the laundries and turbines of the mines.

The water of the Göhl has been flowing through a tunnel dug under the rock since 1862. The Göhl was diverted here because the river's water regularly entered the tunnels and killed miners. The tunnel enabled rapid water drainage in the event of significant flooding. It is impressive how the river disappears into a huge cave via a weir and an artificial waterfall. A small wooden door was used to regulate the flow of water towards the aforementioned canal, which used turbines to power the washrooms.
