The Iron Gate's inner gate was a special security mechanism in case the enemy had already entered through the mighty, outer gate. Then they threw stones or shot at him from above (from a bay window).

The late Gothic town wall of Freinsheim with towers and gates has been almost completely preserved. It is about 1000 m long and characterizes the cityscape. Particularly noteworthy is the front gate to the iron gate with flanking towers and the coat of arms of the Electoral Palatinate. The town center is extraordinarily well restored. Due to the intact historic town center, Freinsheim is also known as the "Palatinate Rothenburg", based on the Franconian town, which has gained worldwide fame as a symbol of the romantic German town.
