Buenos Aires Cauca was founded by the Franciscan Friar Javier Villamarin, Manuel Antonio Acosta (owner of the land), Pedro José Vidal, Marcos Mateo, Leandro León and N. Muñoz on July 20, 1823. Initially the settlement of Buenos Aires was created in the year 1536 on Catalina Hill, a place where the Spaniards and Franciscan friars arrived who brought with them Indigenous and Blacks to exploit the gold mines in the region. Over time they relocated to the Santo Domingo region to end up settling permanently in the place where it is currently located.
