For families with smaller children, this can also be done without any problems. A nice tour from bus stop Klobenstein through the gorge over one of the two bridges and over the smuggler path back to Kössen. Nice tour :-)

Known since the early Bronze Age, cigarettes, coffee and rum were smuggled here between Bavaria and Tyrol after the Second World War. Another highlight is the spectacular gorge.

Beautiful forest hiking trail. Sturdy shoes 👟 are recommended, possibly with hiking poles. 2 large viewing platforms with a view of the Ache, gorge, suspension bridges and Klobenstein chapel.

Very nice family hike - but not suitable for pushchairs due to some steep passages and steps (unless you are carrying the buggy). Great spot to hang out by the river. Two suspension bridges and viewing platforms with spectacular views. In the center of Kössen there is a treasure map for the kids. There is a radio play at some stations along the way.

Beautiful short hiking trail, which is also ideal for children. A highlight is definitely the suspension bridge that leads over the Großache, where you can cool your feet. 😉 You can strengthen yourself in the cozy inn and you should definitely visit the small pilgrimage church Klobenstein

The Smugglers' Trail along the Tiroler Ache River is a striking hiking trail that combines history, nature, and adventure. Along the wild and romantic Ache River, between Kössen (Tyrol) and Schleching (Bavaria), the trail leads through a stunning river landscape that has captivated people for centuries – and was once a popular smugglers' territory.

In earlier times, the border between Austria and Bavaria ran here, and life in the remote valleys was often hard. Many people earned extra income by secretly transporting goods across the border – such as coffee, tobacco, sugar, fabrics, or schnapps. The smugglers knew every path, every ford, and every rock, and they knew exactly when to hide from customs officers. They set out in the dark and fog, with heavy backpacks and watchful eyes, always in danger of being discovered.

Today, the Smugglers' Trail commemorates this eventful past – but entirely without danger. The well-marked circular trail leads along narrow paths along the Tiroler Ache River, past rock formations, forests, and small viewpoints. Breathtaking views of the Entenlochklamm Gorge, where the water roars deep beneath the rocks, open up time and again. Information panels along the trail tell stories about the smugglers, the region, and nature.

The trail is approximately 4 to 6 kilometers long, depending on the chosen route, and is suitable for families, hikers, and nature lovers alike. The hike is particularly scenic in spring or autumn, when the light streams through the gorge and the Ache River shimmers in vibrant colors.
