Standing at the top of a volcanic peak that the Loire meanders around, the village reveals the remains of its castle, the first on the river from its source. The Arlempdes site is recognized by the national geological authorities (BRGM) as rare in France. The now visible part of the rocky eminence of magmatic origin on which the village has settled is in fact the result of the work of erosion. This has cleared over time a supply vein of a volcanic chimney called a "dyke". Visually, this translates into a huge rock dominating the Loire River with an impressive sheer drop. The aesthetics of the rocks - piling up and intermingling of prisms and needles - accentuates the spectacular character of the site.
