Fossil Creek Reservoir Natural Area is an oasis in the southwestern end of town. There are prairie uplands, wetlands, and a tree-lined reservoir teeming with wildlife in this peaceful spot, which is also a designated Important Bird Area. These diverse ecosystems provide important habitats for bald eagles (in the winter) and other raptors, and many species of shorebirds, songbirds, and waterfowl. Unlike many other open spaces and natural areas in Fort Collins, biking, swimming, fishing, boating, and dogs (and other pets) are not permitted. There are several trails in this area for you to enjoy including the Heron Loop, a .25-mile paved loop with picnic shelters; the Sandpiper Trail, a .4 miles to a viewing area; and the Cattail Flats Trail, 0.76 miles to another viewing area.
