The first church stood on the banks of the Scheldt, near the Veer. After the church was ravaged by fire at the end of the 15th century and in 1533, it was decided to build a new church a little further on. According to a sandstone year stone in the north chancel wall, construction started in 1533. Due to the strong population growth in the second half of the 18th century, it was decided to build a larger church. In 1783-1784 engineer Judocus Sibens (Dendermonde) was entrusted with the plans for a new church. The old church was demolished in 1785 with the exception of the choir. The works were completed in 1786 and on August 25, 1788, the new church was dedicated by Cardinal de Franckenberg. The current church still preserves the old choir made of sandstone. The spire was destroyed in a fire in 1809. In 1902 all stained glass windows were renewed. A restoration campaign was started in the 1970s, which ended in early 1993 with the renewal of the paintwork.

St. Apollonia Church in Appels is a modest yet historically valuable village church dating from the late 18th century. It was built between 1786 and 1788. The current church is a three-aisled structure in traditional brick architecture, with a four-story bell tower topped with a gable roof of blue Namur slate. Inside, the church exudes a subdued Baroque atmosphere. The main altar and side altars are made of white and black marble, and the oak confessionals date from around 1777. A special feature is the organ, which came from the former Brigittines Monastery in Dendermonde, adding an extra layer of history to the interior. The church is dedicated to St. Apollonia, patron saint of toothaches, and has served as a spiritual and social anchor for the residents of Appels for centuries.
