The Roman long wall of Butzweiler is a reconstruction. The long wall was originally 72 km long, 80 cm thick and 2 meters high. The original wall was built towards the end of the 4th century. The actual purpose of building the wall and the associated walling of an agricultural area is still unclear today. The walled area is one of the most fertile areas in the Trier region. It is possible that the long wall served as a protective function against invading predators, thus enabling livestock breeding and intensive agriculture. It is also possible that the walled area was used as an imperial hunting ground, for horse breeding or sheep breeding. In the immediate vicinity of the long wall there are other Roman relics such as the herm complex of Welschbillig.

The Long Wall once enclosed an area of 220 square kilometers and stretched 72 kilometers on both sides of the Kyll in a north-south direction. The carvings prove that the construction dates back to the time of the late Roman Emperor Valentinian, who ruled between 364 and 375.

A wonderful view over the Eifel. At the long wall there is a rest area with benches. If you are on the Roman path, you can rest here and enjoy the view. But do not forget jacket!
