The war memorial for the fallen of World War I on the village square was commissioned in 1933 and inaugurated in 1934. On top of the monument was a granite sphere with an Iron Cross attached to it. The years 1914 and 1918 are worked into the south side. In the middle were two panels. The text “our fallen soldiers” was to be read on the upper one and “Gemeinde Altfriedland” on the lower one. The names of the 33 fallen are listed on the east and west sides. Another commemorative plaque is located in the monastery church. The ball with the cross on it and the two lines of writing on the south side were removed after World War II. The whereabouts of the pieces are unknown.
In 2014, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I, the people of Altfriedland came up with the idea of reconstructing the war memorial. Thanks to a generous private donation, this idea could be put into practice in 2016 and the memorial was supplemented with a plaque for the dead of World War II on the north side.
