The port has a history dating back to the early 19th century. At that time, the journey across the lake was the main means of transport with the outside world. The settlers came to the shore of Lake Huron by sailboats and steamers. The drive along the coast was used for transport, trade, and fishing.
Today Port Elgin is a busy harbor for motor and pleasure boats during the summer months from June to October. The location in the fortified bay offers protection from storms.
