Venasque was an episcopal see and namesake of the county of Venaissin. The town and the Vaucluse region originally belonged to the domain of the Counts of Toulouse. In the Albigensian Crusades they fell to the French crown. King Philip the Bold ceded the Comtat Venaissin to Pope Gregory X in 1274. Until the French Revolution (1791) the place was under the control of the Holy See. Like the entire region, Venasque suffered from the Huguenot Wars and was twice besieged by the Protestants (1562 and 1564), although never conquered.

Thanks to its architectural unity and idyllic small squares and fountains, the village was classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France (most beautiful villages in France).

A small but extremely pretty village. Almost car-free, with a few boutiques and restaurants, and a magnificent view of Mont Ventoux.
