The Augustinian monastery is an important pilgrimage station on the Way of St. James. It was renovated a few years ago and now offers many pilgrims good overnight accommodation.

"The monastery church, through which pilgrims were smuggled for centuries, is richly furnished. The altar with its golden balcachin in particular documents the gratitude of the pilgrims for having managed this difficult stage. The large monastery made of solid gray stones stands mighty and proud on the mountain slope ."

When the pilgrim on the Way of St. James - coming from the (French) Pyrenees town of 'Saint Jean Pied de Port' - has now reached Spain with the large monastery of Roncesvalles, the "Camino Frances" begins with the last 800 kilometers to the destination of the pilgrimage route, the tomb of the apostle James (the Greater) in 'Santiago de Compostela'.

The place with the old Augustinian monastery from 1132 was an important stopping point on the Way of St. James and has regained this function with the revitalization of the way.

Pilgrim hostel, but also a recommendable detour from the HRP for a few surprisingly cheap sandwiches. However, it costs a few meters in altitude. Also interesting to immerse yourself in the general hustle and bustle of the Camino de Santiago.

The Franciscan Friar Peter Fobes writes in his pilgrim guide:
"More than with other pilgrimages, it is not only the destination that is important for Santiago, but also the way to get there... The actual experience of St. James is only accessible to those who, if possible, travel the entire route from home to their destination. Everywhere in Europe there are roads or paths which from ancient times have been called the Way of Saint James."

Roncesvalles (Orreaga in Basque) is a town of only 30 inhabitants in the autonomous community of Navarre.
It is not far from the Ibañeta Pyrenees Pass (a natural gateway from France to the Iberian Peninsula since prehistoric times).

                  PRAY WITH YOUR FEET
on the way, lost in thought,
I want to thank God for the opportunity
                  set my heart up
and leave it to God what He wants to tell me.
Grateful for the feet that carry me
so I can reach my goal.
In the conscious look at the diversity of nature,
in conscious listening to the singing of the birds,
in consciously perceiving what is going on in me and in
Being open to the encounters that are given to me.
In leaving behind what I left behind
and in anticipation of what awaits me.
The feet carry me. They are mediators between me and the way,
between what moves my heart and what I am looking for
                  - and the one who is on the way to me.

Roncesvalles (Orreaga in Basque) is a town of just 30 inhabitants located in the Autonomous Community of Navarre.
It is located not far from the Pyrenean pass of Ibañeta (a natural gateway from France to the Iberian peninsula since prehistoric times).
In the eighth century, Charlemagne, King of the Franks, after a failed war of conquest in Spain, was coming back home with his powerful army; in an inaccessible area between the Pyrenees mountains near today Roncesvalles, his rearguard patrol was attacked in an ambush by Basque rebels and destroyed, causing the death also of its leader, the Palatine Count Roland.
The history of this unremarkable fight, became a legend that magnified the extent of the battle, its protagonists (the heroic and fearless Count Roland and the other Paladins) and the aims of the war itself: the Moors became the enemies, instead of the Basques and the conflict was transfigured into a war of religion in order to free Spain from the Muslims and restore Christianity.
The legend spread first orally and then, by the XI century, was codified in writing in the epic poem "Chanson de Roland" sung by troubadours and poets in all the courts of Europe.
Roncesvalles usually corresponds to the goal of the first stage of the Way to Santiago de Compostela. The village in fact has two hostels for the reception of pilgrims.

Large pilgrims' shelter after crossing the Pyrenees.
There are now boxes of 4 in a row, with their own lockers for each bed and a little more privacy.
Good sanitary facilities (no communal showers, but separated by gender)
The showers are very good, even if the number is manageable & you sometimes have to queue for a long time (that can hardly be avoided in such a large pilgrim accommodation)

Food can be booked as an option (breakfast and dinner) & is served in the restaurants that are located nearby.
Otherwise there is a lounge in the hostel itself, with chairs and benches as well as a large kitchen (well equipped) and various drinks and snack machines.

The pilgrim mass followed by a pilgrim's blessing is highly recommended.
As well as the tour that takes place afterwards.

One of the most important points of the Camino De Santiago.
Always, the first well-equipped structure to serve pilgrims in Spain on the road.
Sancho VII, the fort, is buried in the enclosure.
