Saint Hubertus, to whom the church in Hilgerath is dedicated, lived from 655 to 727 and is a very popular saint, known above all as the patron saint of hunters. A stag with a shining cross between its antlers is said to have appeared to him, which is often depicted in portraits of Hubertus. This legend was originally attributed to Saint Eustachius and has 'migrated' to Hubertus over time. His memorial day is November 3rd.

Hilgerath is a lonely mountain church between the forested heights and one of the most impressive pictures of the Vulkaneifel. As a counterpart, Hilgerath can step next to the Weinfeld church on Totenmaar near Daun. The location of the parish church is the center of the parish, which consists of the Strut communities of Beinhausen, Boxberg, Gefell, Kradenbach, Neichen, Nerdlen and Sarmersbach.

The church consists of an old and a new part. Both cross each other with a length of 30m, the old from west to east, the new from north to south, and the apse in the east.

The dead of the parish rest directly at the parish church. A memorial stone commemorates the fallen and missing from the two world wars.

In Hilgerath a Christian facility was built, perhaps instead of a former pagan place of worship on the holy mountain. Legends surround the construction site, which the Lord himself determined. When the first church was built is still unknown.

The tower that is still preserved may have been built in the Middle Ages, certainly before 1500.

Hilgerath was first mentioned in writing in 1504, at that time Hilgerait.

The roof of the church was just repaired in 1719.

In 1750 the church and sacristy were renovated at the expense of the church.

In 1803-05, a new building was made while maintaining the old tower, which was not yet consecrated until 1856. The patron saint of the new church is St. Hubertus.

The church had long since become too small for a parish of more than 900 souls. The parish then celebrated the inauguration of the new transept in 1950.
