The origins go back to 1434 when two estates were founded here and which were managed until 1665.
Leopold Freiherr von Neidthardt zu Spathenbrunn, Oberkammergraf in Eisenerz, combined the two estates and from 1666 expanded the Sauriesselgut into a castle-like property.[1] The naming was supposedly in honor of Emperor Leopold and according to other sources, because the inauguration of the palace building took place on the name day of the builder.[2
The current appearance of the palace next to Lake Leopoldstein is characterized by historicizing elements based on the model of the Bavarian royal palaces and consists of loosely arranged main and ancillary buildings within an enclosing wall next to a striking defense tower. The five large halls of the castle are richly furnished in the form of wall panelling, coffered ceilings, tiled stoves and coat of arms. The Schlosskapelle Leopoldstein is dedicated to the Holy Immaculate Conception.
