Monumental LIGHT BEACON consisting of a 9.30 meter high column with a copper LANTERN built in a Classical style according to the plan of Municipal Works architect J.J.Kolpa from 1943. The column was erected in memory of Arij Willem van Leeuwen (27-5-1805-3-2-1831) quartermaster on the gunboat no. 2, on which J.C.J. Van Speyk was a lieutenant. The column is a reconstructed version on the Oosthavenkade in 1950 of the monument erected in 1831-1832 on the Westhavenkade and renovated in 1859, which was demolished in 1931 due to dilapidation. The monument, which is located on the extreme south side of the Oosthavenkade (Oosterhoofd), is currently used as a beacon for shipping on the Maas, for which purpose the column is partly painted with a green and white stripe.
