Festivals in honor of the Virgin Carmen, the Catholic protector of all sailors, are found all along the Spanish coast. In A Illa de Arousa, the sea procession has been celebrated since the late 1940s. It is the largest in the whole of Arousa Bay, as more than 100 ships participate in it.

The procession begins with the effigy of the Virgin Mary being taken from the Church of St. Julian and taken to the port of Xufre, the largest of the two ports on the island of A Illa. A solemn Mass is celebrated there, and then the image of the Virgin Mary is embarked on the decorated ship intended for the current year. If you want to follow the procession on the sea like me, you can go on many of the other participating ships.

At a certain point all ships stop and a bouquet of flowers is offered in silent respect to the sea. Then follows the procession to the port of the other island, from where the image of the Virgin Mary is brought to its annual place.

In the evening there will be a dance and a fireworks display in the Plaza do Regueiro.
