The late Gothic hall church was largely built between 1510 and 1518, under the Mainz cathedral master builder Johann von Hattstein, as a successor to a Romanesque church first mentioned in 1146. After the western towers, which date back to the Romanesque period, were demolished in 1829 due to dilapidation, the Geisenheim-born master builder Philipp Hoffmann undertook a neo-Gothic reconstruction between 1834 and 1838. In addition to the new towers, which are now 46 meters high, the vault of the nave was changed. The building was given the name cathedral due to its size and importance compared to other churches in the region. It was never the seat of a bishop.
