When Ingolstadt was granted city rights in the 13th century, the settlement was already fortified. Its tight rectangular shape corresponds to the tradition of the early towns founded in Wittelsbach and reveals the planned nature of the complex, which is typical of town planning and fortress architecture in the 13th century.

Four corner towers bordered the rectangular city wall, four city gates allowed entry, and the two main streets (north-south and east-west) intersected in the center. In the southeast, the old castle was part of the city walls

Favored by its good location, Ingolstadt grew rapidly in the 14th century, so that new fortifications became necessary as the city expanded. This was planned in a circle and consisted of a moat, a city wall with a battlement and semicircular towers at regular intervals. The two main streets were extended and four new city gates were built: Feldkirchner Tor (1368), Hardertor (1373), Kreuztor (1385) and Donautor (1430). The work on the new city wall lasted from 1368 to 1430.

This city expansion with a total of over 80 towers earned the city the nickname “The Hundred-Towered City” (Latin: ad centum turres). This shows that this wall was, if not a unique selling point, then at least a trademark of the city.
