The Herrenteich in Reinfeld owes its existence to the Cistercian monks who founded the "Reynevelde" monastery in the 12th century in the area of the marshy lowlands of the Heilsau. The Heilsau rises near today's Stockelsdorf (Ostholstein district) and flows into the Trave below Reinfeld. The monks cleared the forest, created smaller fish ponds and took the excavation to use the dam to dam the Heilsau to the Herrenteich, so that they could breed carp there. Even today, the Herrenteich is used for carp farming and is therefore drained for 3 - 4 weeks in October of each year in connection with the carp festival of the city of Reinfeld. Only the Heilsau snakes its way through the surface of the pond floor as a thin ribbon.

In addition to the large body of water, the “Oberer Herrenteich” nature reserve includes the adjacent reed areas as well as willow swamps, alder swamp forests, wet meadows and dry hills.
The nature reserve is not accessible and can only be seen from a few places, such as the Fischhuser Damm hiking trail, a viewing point at Poggenkamp in the west of the protected area and from the bridge over the Heilsau in Heidekamp.
The Fischhuser Damm hiking trail is part of the approximately four-kilometer-long nature experience trail that runs around the Unterer Herrenteich.

Cistercian monks who founded the “Reynevelde” monastery in the area of the marshy lowlands of the Heilsau in the 12th century.
The Heilsau rises near today's Stockelsdorf (Ostholstein district) and flows into the Trave below Reinfeld.
In 1186, Count Adolf commissioned this Cistercian order to reclaim this "place of loneliness and terror," according to contemporary witness Provost Sido from Neumünster.
They cleared the forest, created small fish ponds and used the excavated material to create a dam for the Heilsau to form the Herrenteich.

The monks lived in the Reynevelde monastery until the 16th century, which had become rich and powerful through its agriculture, forestry and, above all, pond farming. The Reformation ended the work of the order, which had greatly changed and shaped the landscape by creating over 60 ponds.
The Herrenteich is still used today for carp farming and is therefore drained for 3-4 weeks in October of each year in conjunction with the carp festival in the town of Reinfeld. Only the Heilsau then winds its way through the surface of the pond floor as a thin ribbon.

The approximately 70 hectare Upper Herrenteich nature reserve was designated in 1999.
It lies between Reinfeld and Heidekamp and includes the northern part of the Herrenteich in Reinfeld, the areas surrounding it and the lowland area of the Heilsau to the north with the adjacent areas.
To the south, the Fischhuser Damm hiking trail borders the nature reserve.
To the north, the “Wallber and wooded terminal moraine landscape near Heidekamp” landscape conservation area borders the nature reserve, and to the west and south, the “Reinfeld” landscape conservation area borders the nature reserve.

The Herrenteich was created in the 12th century by Cistercian monks from the Reynevelde monastery by damming the Heilsau and used for fish farming.
Since the beginning of the 1980s, the German Association for the Protection of Birds and later the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union have campaigned to preserve the valuable habitat at the Upper Herrenteich.
As early as 1982, the German Nature Conservation Association applied for the Upper Herrenteich to be designated as a nature reserve. In 1987, the NABU acquired a 4.5 hectare plot of land with alder swamps, wet meadows, hedgerows and dry grassland and took it out of use. It was not until 1999 that the current nature reserve was designated, which has been managed by the Schleswig-Holstein regional association of the German Nature Conservation Association since 2000.

The Herrenteich is used for fishing for carp. The pond also contains pike, tench and eels, among others. The pond is drained every year in October for fishing.

The nature reserve is not accessible and can only be seen from a few places, such as the Fischhuser Damm hiking trail, a viewing point on the Poggenkamp in the west of the protected area and from the bridge over the Heilsau in Heidekamp.
The Fischhuser Damm hiking trail is part of the approximately four-kilometer-long nature trail that runs around the Unterer Herrenteich.

The 3.7 km long trail leads along the partially wooded shore of the Herrenteich lake. The east and west banks are connected by a bridge at the "Fischhuser Damm"—north of this bridge begins the "Oberer Herrenteich" nature reserve. See: reinfeld-aktiv.de/tag/reinfeld/page/6

The Herrenteich is located right in the heart of the carp town of Reinfeld. It was artificially created in the 12th century by the Cistercian monks as a reservoir for the Heilsau for fish farming. Carp are still bred here today.

A four-kilometer circular path around the Lower Herrenteich invites you to discover this special ecosystem. 16 stations on the adventure trail offer you fun and a nature experience in one and sharpen your eye for the special features of this natural area.

In summer you can enjoy the cool water at the lido.
