The fortifications in the city of Kos with this Gate of Taxes were built by order of the Order of Saint John between 1391 and 1396
Remains of the medieval city walls can be seen behind the Defterdar Mosque, on the east side of Eleftherías Square. This includes the round defense tower and the Gate of Taxes (Pórta tou Fórou), via which the market square (the Agorá) could be reached in the Middle Ages.
The traders who wanted to offer their goods on the marketplace had to pay their taxes here. Leaving Eleftherías Square through the Gate of Taxes, you come to Odós Nafklírou, also known as Bar Street. Today one tavern follows the next. In a shady atmosphere, with a view of the Agorá, you can recover from a city tour and pay your taxes in a modern way by paying the bill.
The Gate of Taxes was also damaged in the earthquake. The large bougainvillea that gave the gate a particularly magnificent appearance had to be removed for the restoration.
