In 1922, priest Antanas Maciulevičius (1882-1968) returned to Paisete II (3.5 km south of Saldutiškis) from Russia. He established a chapel in the hall of the Jalovetsky mansion in Saldutiškis and began holding services. In 1923 Canon Juozapas Kukta, who from 1922 to 1926 governed the rest of the Diocese of Vilnius in Lithuania on behalf of Vilnius Bishop Jurgis Matulaitis, founded the congregation. In 1924 Stanislovas Švėgžda, who had returned from Russia, was appointed pastor of Saldutiškis.
The Land Reform Commission handed over the Saldutiškis brick mansion, in which the vicarage was established, to the municipality. The church was built on the foundations of the former manor barn, and the wooden part with the towers was built on the foundations in 1925-1928. In 1938 Bishop Juozapas Kukta handed over the parish of Saldutiškis to the Salesian monks. The administrator of the parish was Father Juozapas Gustas (1906-1958), who was arrested by the Bolsheviks after World War II and died in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
Dean Juozapas Masalskas (1923-1985; buried in the churchyard) was pastor of Saldutišky until 1985. He renovated and painted the church. A. Maciulevičius, a simple, helpful and unselfish man, was the pastor of Saldutišky until his death; in the post-war years he was the keeper of the collective farm animals (Translated from Wikipedia).
