In Christianity, Michael is considered to be the slayer of the devil in the form of the dragon (fall into hell) and the leader of the heavenly hosts. This goes back to a formulation of the Septuagint (Jos 5.14 EU): "the supreme commander of the army of the Lord" (ancient Greek ἀρχιστράτηγος δυνάμεως Κυρίου archistrátēgos dynámeōs Kyríou). The last words Satan heard before his fall are said to have been "Who (is) like God?" - a literal translation of the Hebrew Mi-ka-el. Early on, Michael is portrayed as the guardian of the gates of paradise. According to church tradition, he also has the role of "weighing souls" on the day of judgment.
