Hengebach Castle was built on a greywacke rock in the 11th century. It is one of the oldest buildings in the Eifel. Over the centuries, the historic walls have experienced an eventful history. Various rulers once lived and ruled in the fortress. The lion of the Jülich family of counts still adorns the city coat of arms. The courtyards, ramparts and keep are accessible year-round free of charge. The "International Art Academy Heimbach/Eifel" (rureifel-tourismus. de/a-burg-hengebach).

The medieval hilltop castle rises freely from the Rur valley to over 200 meters above sea level and is the imposing landmark of the town of Heimbach. You can take a look at the castle complex from almost anywhere in the town, and each time you look there is a new perspective.
The courtyard, battlements and keep are open free of charge all year round. Parts of the complex are wheelchair accessible by elevator. Even from the courtyard there is an impressive panoramic view of Heimbach and the Rur valley - a climb up the keep increases the pleasure even further.
