The Cretto di Burri or Cretto di Gibellina is the colloquial name by which the Great Cretto, a work of environmental art by Alberto Burri, is known. It was built in a first phase between 1984 and 1989 and subsequently completed in 2015, in the place where the old city of Gibellina once stood, completely destroyed by the 1968 Belice earthquake. Burri designed a gigantic monument that traces the streets and alleys of the old city: in fact, it stands in the same place where once there was the rubble, now cemented by Burri's work; the blocks were made by piling up and caging the rubble of the buildings themselves.
From above, the work looks like a series of concrete fractures on the ground, whose artistic value lies in the freezing of a country's historical memory. Each fissure is two to three meters wide, while the blocks are about one and sixty meters high and have an area of about 80,000 square meters, making it one of the largest contemporary works of art in the world. About 350 meters from the work, it is also possible to see the remains of the ruins of Gibellina.
