From 2030, an attractive lake district will be created here. Several vantage points provide a wide view of the open pit and give an excellent impression of the dimensions of the open pit. Huge excavators and conveyors show how brown coal is extracted and transported. The 45 meter thick coal seam lies more than 200 meters below the natural terrain. The total of five bucket wheel excavators with a length of up to 220 meters and a maximum height of 70 meters extract 25 million tons of coal and up to 95 million tons of overburden every year. The overburden masses are used for backfilling and recultivation of the depleted areas (indeland-erleben.de/urlaubszielen/tagebau-inden).
