The Plaza de la Constitución was the scene of a pivotal event in the history of the State of Uruguay. The so-called Jura de la Constitución (constitutional oath) took place here on July 18, 1830, the day the first constitution was passed as part of Uruguay's independence. The design of the square and the first plantings were done in 1855 by José Pedro Margat. In the center of the square is a fountain, inaugurated on July 18, 1871, created by the Italian Juan Ferrari (1836-1918). On the west side rises the Iglesia Matriz, built in 1790, the cathedral of Montevideo. Next to it is the Museo Gurvich. On the opposite east side is the Cabildo, the former town hall of Montevideo, which dates back to the colonial era and was built in 1804, with the Museo y Archivo Histórico Municipal. The square has been classified as a Monumento Histórico Nacional since 1975.
