Ilhabela (in English: beautiful island) lies off the coast between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and is the largest Brazilian island in the Atlantic at 340 square kilometers. White sandy beaches, beautiful jungle and massive mountain peaks make Ilhabela a great destination for a vacation in Brazil.
Ilhabela used to be a hideout for English pirates. The pirates anchored on the long sandy beaches. Today, around 35,000 people live on the island and every year - especially between late December and mid-February - hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to Ilhabela.
There is no road leading to the village of Bonete and therefore cannot be reached by car. Most come by boat (taxi boat) only a few walk through the nature park to Bonete. On the way you walk over 2 shaky suspension bridges - a unique nature experience.
