The Baroque Garden of Isola Bella: A Masterpiece of Nature, Art, and Architecture

The garden of Isola Bella was conceived from the outset to be organic and complementary to the palazzo, forming a harmonious, Baroque-influenced whole. The Atrio di Diana (Atrium of Diana) is a small courtyard through which you can access the outside from the palazzo. From here, you can access the garden via one of two staircases. A wonderful, picturesque setting with the imposing Teatro Massimo at its center. The amphitheater consists of ten flowering terraces arranged in a truncated pyramid. Statues, fountains, and architectural perspectives lend a harmonious effect to the meticulously designed structure. The entire structure is dominated by the unicorn—the heraldic symbol of the Borromeo family—riding honor, flanked by sculptures depicting art and nature. Most of them were created by the sculptor Carlo Simonetta at the end of the 17th century. From the large terrace, 37 meters above the lake, you can admire the Borromean Gulf and the entire surrounding area of Lake Maggiore as far as the eye can see.

DISCOVER ISOLA BELLA / Glimpses into Beauty

But from up there, you also have another special view: the Giardino d'Amore (Garden of Love). Four beds framed by boxwood hedges are arranged around a water lily pond like a perfectly executed embroidery. All around, citrus tree trellises, flowerpots, and geometrically shaped trees alternate with the precision and accuracy typical of an Italian garden.

Citrus plants have populated the garden for centuries. As you walk along the straight path of the Belvedere, their exuberance does not go unnoticed. Looking down, your gaze falls on the Viale degli Aranci (Avenue of Oranges) as far as the Torre dei Venti (Tower of the Winds) – which houses the bookshop – and, on the opposite side, symmetrically, on the Torre della Noria (Noria Tower), where the cafeteria with outdoor tables is located. This is where the Viale di Ponente begins. Between trellises covered with citrus trees, you can make out the Serra Elisa, an iron and glass structure with niches and columns inside, originally intended as a winter garden and now housing plants and botanical rarities.

In the 19th century, the garden was enriched with exotic collections. In the Piano della Canfora, named after the monumental camphor tree that has dominated the garden for over two hundred years, we encounter many of them. White peacocks stroll freely in its shade. Old and classic botanical species bloom on the Terrazza delle Rose (Rose Terrace) and the Parterre delle Azalee (Azalea Parterre), which color the garden white and fuchsia from April onwards. When the climbing plants on the terrace's trellises also bloom luxuriantly, a color palette ranging from cherry red to coral and peach pink emerges, clearly visible upon arrival from the lake.

It is the heart of the garden, with a multitude of statues and obelisks adorning the superimposed exedra, almost all of them created by Carlo Simonetta at the end of the 17th century. Among the personifications of art and nature, the statue of the unicorn, the heraldic symbol of the Borromeo family, dominates the whole, while on the sides four obelisks with statues representing the elements of air, water, earth and fire. At the top of the amphitheater, 37 meters above sea level, there is a large terrace, the best place to enjoy the panorama and the garden view.
