La Halle was the administrative center of the city. It was upstairs that meetings with the Magistrate and the aldermen took place until 1737. at public sales.
In the 19th century, the Halle housed a covered market, upstairs the school and in the cellars, the prison.

At the top of the Grand-Place stands the old market hall, a recently restored neoclassical building, opened by pillars on the ground floor. Already mentioned in 1377, this building housed the meetings of the magistrate and aldermen until 1737. These took place upstairs and bore witness to the communal life of the city, not far from the castle, the seat of political power. Since 1093, the Couvin estate has been part of the principality of Liège. In 1203, the town became the seat of a lordship and was surrounded by walls. To manage the domain in his place, the prince-bishop delegates his civil powers to an attorney and a provost, from the local aristocracy. Couvin also became one of the twenty-two good towns of the principality. If the upper floor was reserved for meetings of magistrates, the ground floor of the hall served as premises for public sales, a place for posting notices to the population or for meetings at the exit of the church. At the end of the 18th century, the interior was renovated to house a covered market and a school upstairs. The exterior of the building was finally completely rebuilt around 1835. It has beautiful facades in carefully matched blue stone. The restoration of the old market also made it possible to renovate the neighboring building. This house served as accommodation for the prison guard, after the reconstruction of the whole in 1835. Both classified, they are awaiting reassignment.

Mentioned as early as 137, the hall underwent multiple transformations during the
time to finally be rebuilt externally around 1835 in neoclassical style. Its first floor hosts the meetings of the Magistrate and aldermen
until 1737. Its cellars were converted into a prison, replacing the one which
was located in one of the towers of the Notre-Dame gate ceded in 1657 to the Recollectine nuns. The open ground floor with transom pillars was
used for public sales, to display notices to the population and as
meeting place outside the church. In the 19th century, the hall houses both a market
covered on the ground floor and the school upstairs. Then, the building serves both
library and fire station.
