To get to the Rabenstein ruins, go down No. 1 of the Drei-Burgen-Weg.
On one side it is very steep. You should be sure-footed!
The goal is worth the hike, because you will have a fantastic view of Riedenburg, the Main-Danube Canal and in the distance, Prunn Castle.

Rabenstein Castle is the oldest of the three castle complexes. It was first mentioned in the 13th century. From the 14th century, the former manor was not mentioned in any record. At that time, it was probably abandoned, decayed or fell victim to a fire.

The Rabenstein Castle ruins are a popular vantage point, offering a beautiful view of the town nestled in the valley below and the Altmühl Valley. If you look east, you might even spot the Tachenstein Castle ruins.
The small medieval castle, which probably dates back to the 12th century, is also the oldest of Riedenburg's three castle complexes. Not much is known about its builders. In the 13th century, an Albert von Rabenstein is mentioned, so it is assumed that the Rabenstein family were also the builders of the castle. Since the castle is no longer mentioned in any records after 1400, it is likely that it was either abandoned, dilapidated, or destroyed by fire by that time.

Today, you can still see the remains of the almost rectangular ring of walls in the lower part of the former castle complex, and on the west side, the remains of the medieval residential and defensive tower.

A hike along the Three Castles Trail offers the opportunity to visit the Rabenstein Castle ruins, the Tachenstein Castle ruins, and the Rosenburg Castle with its falconry all in one day.

A really great view over the Altmühltal! From my own experience: We are all adventurers, but climbing the old keep is deadly dangerous. From above you don't see much more than from below, where you can stroll along on safe foot. So do yourself a favor and stay safe in the courtyard and enjoy the wonderful view from there. The risk of falling is not worth it!
