Before the Reformation, the Roman Catholics of Winterswijk worshiped in the Jacobskerk on the Markt, which was transferred to the Protestants after the Reformation. The Roman Catholics then had to rely on mission posts set up by the Bishop of Münster Christoph Bernhard von Galen just across the border, such as the church in Oeding and the Church of St. Francis in Zwillbrock. Various requests were submitted to build a private church in Winterswijk, but these were not granted time and time again. In the French era, however, there was much more freedom and in 1799 approval for the construction of a church followed. That same year, the church was built on Misterstraat and was inaugurated at the end of the year. In 1854 the establishment of its own parish followed.

In the center of Winterswijk stands the imposing Jacobskerk. The church dates back to the Middle Ages and has the status of a national monument. Exhibitions, concerts and other events take place regularly, guided tours are offered and it is possible to climb the tower.
