The facade to the south and the 80 m high campanile, completed in 1925, with a publicly accessible viewing platform, are richly structured and decorated with statues. The side aisles are divided into chapels with their own flat domes and apses; the chapel ring at the choir has the same design.

The Marienkirche, built between 1876 and 1891, is one of the most frequently visited pilgrimage churches by Catholics, with over 4 million visitors a year. Miraculous healings were attributed to the miraculous image of Pompei (Mary on the throne with the Jesus child in her arms and San Domenico and Santa Caterina at her feet) that decorates the altar, which drew / draws a large number of visitors.
