Built in 1717 as the main house (Wohnstallhaus) of a typical small farm Dreiseithofs in the former village Gohlis (today Menckestraße). In the first single-storey building of clay in Pisé-style (rammed earth), in the attic with stud walls and clay pockets, is the living part with "large" and "small" parlor, the hallway with back separated, possibly "black kitchen" and after the garden side stable.
2nd half of the 18th century In order to create accommodation for summer guests, the stable section in Stube and Kammer (Quartier Göschen) will be rebuilt and the eastern part of the building will be expanded to provide another room with a sleeping room (Schiller quarter). The painting of the rooms corresponds to early classicist design patterns of urban burgher houses.
1785 - The 25-year-old poet Friedrich Schiller, known throughout Germany for his play "Die Räuber", is invited to Leipzig by a circle of friends around the lawyer Christian Gottfried Körner (1756-1831). He lives in this house from early May to September 11 as a creative summer guest.
The publisher Georg Joachim Göschen (1758-1828) gave him the quarters. Schiller writes here the ode "An der Freude", which is already distributed in copies before the printing and is known worldwide through the final choir in Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770-1827) Symphony No. 9. He also works on "Don Carlos".
