In the 1990s, with the help of domestic and foreign investors, the old department stores of the former port district were converted into lofts, offices, private universities, hotels and restaurants. In 2008, the Fortabat Museum was opened in a new building on the northern harbor basin. Internationally renowned architects worked on the redesign, including Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster, César Pelli and Phillippe Starck. Puerto Madero has since developed into one of the trendiest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires and is an attraction for young and old people alike.

Buenos Aires had the problem that large ships could not anchor in the harbor due to the shallow water depth of the Rio de la Plata. That's why in 1882 Eduardo Madero was commissioned to build a new port. Construction began in 1887 and was completed 10 years later. Ten more years later the port was already out of date and Puerto Nuevo had to be built. When it went into operation in 1911, Puerto Madero became redundant and fell into disrepair.
It was only in the 1990s that the old warehouses were converted into modern lofts, offices, hotels, etc. converted.
