        In the summer of 1972, the current zoo in Wingst was founded as a baby zoo. It was intended exclusively for the admission of animal children from other zoos, in which often too many baby animals were born or which were not accepted by their parents. Such babies were bought and raised by keepers. The animals often belonged to the "second generation" of zoo animals and had become accustomed to humans while their parents were still "wild catches". In the beginning many enclosures were a bit narrow. From about the year 2000, a new concept was implemented for the zoo in Wingst. Today Wingster Zoo is increasingly seeing groups of animals in more spacious, more naturally designed enclosures. In 2006/07, the zoo was expanded to include a wolf and bear forest.

          The parking lot at the zoo is the ideal starting point for hikes in the Wingst. The hiking trails W1 to W5 meet here, so that from here - with the exception of the hiking trail W6 (around Cadenberge) - all walks can be started or several walks can be freely combined.

            This is a small, fine zoo. It is clear and the animals all make a well-kept impression, that is important to us. You do not have to plan a day trip, but can spend a few hours here, if you like.
