A church existed in Heiligenstedten already since the 9th century as one of the oldest church foundations north of the Elbe. It was probably related to the castle Esesfeld, also built in the 9th century. The present church building dates from the end of the 13th century; It received its present appearance by renovations in 1580. In 1826, the church, which had previously been on a Wurt in the outer dike, diked. Even today the church is a few steps lower than the entrance.
