Sanary-surMer, the French port city on the Mediterranean, idyllically located between Toulon and Marseille. There are certainly not many places that deserve the name “paradise on earth”. But Sanary-sur-Mer deserves this name. Surrounded by fine sandy beaches, the fishing village enchants with the typical flair of the Côte d'Azur. And yet the town has retained its authentic and original ambience to this day. No event shaped the city's past as much as the period of exile during the National Socialist takeover. It served as a refuge for German writers and cultural representatives from 1933 to 1942. Anyone who visits the city automatically follows in the footsteps of literary greats such as Heinrich and Thomas Mann, Stefan Zweig, Bertolt Brecht and Lion Feuchtwanger. For the philosopher Ludwig Marcuse, Sanary-sur-Mer was the “capital of German literature in exile” that went down in history. A circular route with
40 information boards document this eventful time.
