The monument was created by Adolf von Donndorf (Weimar). It was erected on Karlsplatz and dedicated on May 4, 1895, to great public acclaim. The bronze monument, depicting an indomitable Luther, stands on a red granite base. The three reliefs on the base depict Luther as a student and carol singer, the translation of the Bible, and Luther as "Junker Jörg." The front commemorates Luther's arrival at Wartburg Castle, while the back bears the inscription "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." Luther wrote the lyrics of this popular hymn. The title line can also be found above the entrance portal of St. George's Church.

There are regular ceremonies at the Luther Monument on St. Martin's Day (November 10). The monument is also a major attraction for tourists.
