Willinghusen was first mentioned in a document in 1238, when Count Adolf IV bequeathed half of Willinghusen to the cathedral chapter in Hamburg, along with jurisdiction.
The origin of the place name probably lies in the old forms Weddingehusen, Wittigehusen and Wedingenhusen. This meant something like gifted property or gifted village. The determinant was originally Wedele (High German Wittum),
which meant the compulsory portion of a widow, donations to the church or the rectory. The suffix -husen suggests a Saxon origin.
