There used to be two debtors' towers on the Vordere Insel Schütt (Schild Island). They were connected by the Debtors' Tower Bridge (now Heubrücke). The towers on the south and north banks of the Pegnitz were part of the so-called penultimate city fortifications. The south tower, which still stands today, was built in 1323 under the direction of master builder Conrat Stromer.

Each of the two towers served as a prison for indebted individuals in the Middle Ages. Strictly segregated by gender, the buildings were called "Men's Debt Tower" or "Men's Journeys" and "Women's Debt Tower" or "Women's Journeys." The names originated from the cage-like interiors with iron bars and iron chains. The Women's Debt Tower, located south of the Pegnitz, was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. The Women's Journeys were primarily used to imprison "wandering prostitutes or dissolute women" who had attracted attention through alleged lewdness or insults against respectable people.
