The courtyard garden was created from 1735 following the summer residence of the Prince Bishop, which was built by Gabriel de Gabrieli and is now used as the administrative building of the Catholic University.
The Hofgarten extends in the form of a large rectangle to the southwest towards the Altmühl. The three large garden pavilions are also by Gabrieli. The large central pavilion was redesigned by Maritio Pedetti in the years 1779-1781 into an open garden room with a fountain. In the first half of the 19th century the baroque garden was converted into an English garden. The courtyard garden is currently home to more than 180 trees and shrubs of around 50 different species

Strict layouts of small tree avenues and carefully trimmed, partly ornamental low hedges characterized the style of the historical complex. After secularization, the Dukes of Leuchtenberg redesigned the court garden in the style of the English Gardens to suit the tastes of the new era. With the conversion of the summer residence into the administrative headquarters of the university, the adjoining garden part was redesigned as a baroque complex. Today the courtyard garden with around 180 trees and shrubs of more than 50 species also functions as a botanical garden (arboretum).
