Mariaort railway bridge

The 368.2 m long bridge has two tracks and, on the downstream side, a path for pedestrians and cyclists that ends above the Mariaort pilgrimage church. Two of the three main openings of the bridge, each 65 m wide, cross the Danube, the other crosses the flood bed in front of Großprüfungening. The superstructure of the three main openings consists of steel trusses of different designs.

The bridge was planned and built by the Maffeische Werkstätten in Regensburg between 1870 and 1872 on behalf of the Bavarian Eastern Railway corporation. The pillars were already designed for a double-track route. Initially used as a single track, it was expanded to two tracks and various reinforcements were made between 1894 and 1896. In 1926 the old construction of the Maffeische Werkstätten was replaced by steel fishbelly beams.

During World War II the bridge was repeatedly bombed and destroyed. After the end of the war it was initially rebuilt on a makeshift basis. When the final reconstruction was completed in 1950, electrical operation of the line began. Extensive repairs to the bridge were completed in 2014.

After the Schwabelweise Danube Bridge (1856), the second Regensburg railway bridge built around 1870.

The approx. 1.5m narrow footpath is also popular with cyclists.
