The first coal exploration drillings were carried out in Herringen and Pelkum as early as 1874, but shafts I and II were not sunk until 1901. They were named "Heinrich" and "Robert" after the brothers Henri and Robert de Wendel, who owned the mining area.

The mine remained in operation until 2010, most recently as part of the Deutsche Steinkohle AG's East combined mine.
