"Otters live semi-aquatically (partly in water, partly on land) and are perfectly adapted to aquatic life in terms of physique, way of life and behavior. Young otters are born non-swimmers, but after about 10 weeks they have already mastered the wet element perfectly. As adult animals, otters can swim almost silently and hear and smell underwater without any problems. Contrary to what its name might suggest, the otter not only eats fish: small mammals, birds and amphibians are also on its menu. because our water martens have eaten their fill of toads.
The otter's fur is impermeable to water with smooth guard hairs and a dense undercoat. Otters have 50,000 to 100,000 hairs on one cm² of skin - so there are an incredible 140 million hairs per animal! The thick fur ensures that water cannot penetrate through to the skin. For comparison: We humans have just 120 hairs on a cm² scalp. However, this valuable fur was almost fatal to the otters: people hunted the water marten to get the dense fur, it was also driven out of fish ponds as a food competitor and many individuals drowned in fish traps. Even the meat of the otter used to be on the menu: as an animal that lived mainly in the water, it was considered a “fish” and could also be eaten during Lent.
The otter is still one of the most threatened mammals in Europe, especially as habitats are becoming scarce. 30 years ago the otter only existed in remnants in Germany. But there is hope: Thanks to targeted protective measures, the stocks have recovered in most federal states today."
