St. Nicholas Parish Church

The first church in the area likely stood in the immediate vicinity of Abbach Castle, i.e., on the site of the present church. The Romanesque church probably already existed in the Carolingian period, as confirmed by a deed of donation from Emperor Henry II from 1007.

The previous church had to be closed and demolished in 1842 due to dilapidation. However, construction of the new church could not begin until the fall of 1849. Construction was completed in 1852, and the consecration took place on August 10, 1859, by Bishop Ignatius von Senestrey.
The east-facing building comprises a nave with six bays and a distinctly recessed choir, with small sacristy extensions on each of the north and south sides. On the west side, the square, 68-meter-high tower is attached to the central axis of the nave. Access to the church interior is via a portal on each of the north and south sides. The nave is spanned by a flat wooden ceiling, and the choir area by a ribbed vault. The organ loft, supported by two slender wooden columns, is located in the rear bay of the nave.
In 1952, a major renovation was carried out in keeping with contemporary taste. During this intervention, significant parts of the neo-Gothic furnishings were removed. The interior was painted pure white. The only decorations were two fresco-like murals that replaced the structures of the side altars. Later, preserved neo-Gothic elements were reinstated. In 1984, the people's altar and ambo were constructed from parts of the old communion rail.
The altarpiece of the high altar depicts Saint Nicholas, Bishop, raising his right hand in the manner of a Latin blessing. In his left hand, he holds the crosier and the Gospel Book, on which lie three golden balls. At his feet, the needy kneel, begging the saint for alms.
The left side altar depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, flanked by two angels. The right side altar depicts the young Prince Henry, to whom his deceased teacher, Bishop Wolfgang, appears.

Notable is the epitaph of Bernhard von Stinglheim on the south wall. The deceased is depicted in full knight's armor, resting his left hand on his hip and holding a war hammer in his right.
