Behind the stately buildings of the Oudegracht lies the Zeven Steegjes, one of the city's last working-class districts.

The workers' houses from the 19th century and the narrow streets are characteristic.
The workers' houses in Zeven Steegjes were built in the 19th century for employees of the surrounding factories and large Roman Catholic families.

The workers' houses at Zeven Steegjes were built in 1843 and 1860 by order of the Roman Catholic poor chamber behind the De Boog brewery on the Oudegracht. There was also a cigar factory and a sugar factory nearby. The houses were intended for factory employees, but there were also extended families who depended on charity and were closely monitored by the church. The houses were restored in the 1990s but have retained their charm.
